This book is the result of a collaborative effort around shared goals, carried out by individuals and institutions from highly diverse disciplinary fields. The scientific objectives also include the dissemination of a wealth of knowledge to a broader audience, with particular attention given to younger generations, under the conviction that today’s culture requires—perhaps more than ever—an organic and coordinated perspective on the challenges it faces. Such coordination of scientific, organizational, and economic interests was only made possible through the synergistic convergence of efforts by all those who contributed to Leonardo express, the conference cycle organized by the Institute of Italian Studies at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Coimbra, the Department of Architecture at the Faculty of Science and Technology, and CCNC 2003.
