Sinopse

The projects presented were developed within the scope of the curricular units of the Research Seminar and Atelier of Project II, during the academic year 2019-2020, under the guidance of Professor João Mendes Ribeiro and with the theoretical and scientific support of Professor Rui Lobo. The seminar, titled "Project of Valorization, Rehabilitation, and Conservation of the Monastery of Santa Cruz and Surrounding Area," proposes the theme of building within the built environment to reflect on the present city, particularly in a historical urban context.
The object of this study is the Monastery of Santa Cruz in Coimbra, and the proposed practical exercise consists of adapting the Monastery into a museum, as a means of its valorization and a generator of urban transformation. The uniqueness of the Monastery of Santa Cruz, in the context of the city of Coimbra, demands a deep understanding of its urban evolution to substantiate the project options and justify the relationship between the new buildings to be constructed and those to be rehabilitated. In this sense, it is particularly important to understand the historical context that, during the Renaissance, led to the construction of the Claustro da Manga and how the alterations to the grid of the Baixa of Coimbra at the beginning of the 20th century affected the typology of that space.
