Sinopse

After an initial Manueline reform, the Convent of Santa Cruz underwent a new and profound intervention from 1527, ordered by King João III. In light of the emerging mindset, the spiritual reform of the Regular Canons required a new type of headquarters building.
Rua da Sofia, opened according to the Parisian model of Rue de Sorbonne (as proposed here), would serve as the foundation for the colleges that various religious orders were to build in Coimbra, following the definitive establishment of the University in the city in 1537.
Intimately connected to Santa Cruz, where the Minor Studies would be installed (soon transferred to the new and never completed College of Arts), Rua da Sofia would support the most extensive and varied "laboratory" of Renaissance architecture in Portugal.
