Master in Artificial Intelligence

UNIVERSITY OF COIMBRA CAMPUS IN FIGUEIRA DA FOZ

Presentation

The Master’s Degree in Artificial Intelligence (MIA) at the University of Coimbra is a second-cycle programme with a duration of two years (120 ECTS), designed to train professionals capable of conceiving, developing, and applying advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions in scientific and industrial contexts. With a comprehensive and up-to-date approach, the programme covers the main subfields of AI and fosters critical reflection on its ethical and social implications, encouraging a responsible and human-centred practice.

The MIA takes place at the University of Coimbra’s new campus in Figueira da Foz, a coastal city that combines the quality of life of a seaside environment with modern infrastructure. This setting offers a favourable context for concentration, collaboration, and creative development, enriching the academic experience.

Curriculum Plan

The curriculum is designed to keep pace with the rapid evolution of Artificial Intelligence, balancing strong theoretical foundations with practical skills development. The study cycle is organised into four semesters over two years and includes 10 compulsory courses, 9 electives (each worth 6 ECTS), and a dissertation or internship (42 ECTS).

Courses are delivered in sequential blocks of approximately four weeks, allowing students to focus intensively on each subject area. This structure supports deep and applied learning, fostering a solid and flexible education aligned with the demands of research and technological innovation.

The following table presents the organisational structure of the programme, outlining the expected sequence of course delivery. In general, classes are scheduled in blocks of 2.5 consecutive days per week (e.g., Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday morning), allowing the remaining time to be devoted to independent study, project development, and practical assignments. The final week of each course block is reserved for assessment.
