Revista de Estudos Literários, Volume 11 (2021)
Editors: António Apolinário Lourenço (University of Coimbra) and Antonio Sáez Delgado (University of Évora)
Theme: Iberian Studies: Plural Dialogues

Despite the widespread commonplace that has insistently spoken, over time, of an Iberian Peninsula made up of two countries that are unknown to or purposefully ignored by each other, the systematic study of cultural relations between Portugal and Spain currently shows a very different map. The appearance, in the eighties of the twentieth century, of an academic field called Iberian Studies, either as a critical expansion of Hispanism, or as a specific subarea of Comparative Literature, in conjunction with Area Studies, has proposed the reconsideration of the Iberian Peninsula as a complex system of historical and cultural relations. From this critical perspective, the Peninsula is transformed into a geo-cultural space with its own dynamic and tensions from an aesthetic and ideological point of view, which are manifested not only in the radial sense of the relations between the Portuguese and Castilian contexts, but in a more plural and rhizomatic sense, with deep flows between different centres and peripheries.

Proposals for articles may address, among other issues, the following topics:
1. Theoretical and methodological foundations of Iberian Studies;
2. Iberian literary dynamics: centres and peripheries;
3. Iberian literary relations: case studies;
4. Literature and ideology: hegemonies and subordinations;
5. Iberian literature and interart studies;
6. Translation as cultural mediation in the Iberian space.
