The "Institute for Philosophical Studies" (IEF) is a Research & Development Unit funded by the FCT - Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P., wholly committed to the research into philosophy.
Having its headquarters at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Coimbra (FLUC), it integrates and welcomes as well members coming from different Portuguese and foreign higher education institutions.
The IEF pursues gender-aware research and integration practices and policies.
The IEF has as its main line of research the philosophy of care. It has never been more urgent than in these times to pay attention to the issues of care.
At the IEF, priority is given to the intersections between these issues and all of the traditional fields of philosophy, namely ontology and metaphysics, ethics and aesthetics, politics and society, logic and argumentation, science and anthropology, plus hermeneutics and religion.
Mindful of the history of philosophy and engaging in dialogue with its major writings, thoughtfully translated, the IEF is also committed to the mission of fostering Portuguese speaking philosophical thinking and conceptualization, along with the restoration, further development and worldwide dissemination of all of the significant philosophical heritage pertaining to the "Coimbra school."
Apart from taking care of the traditional philosophical conceptual meanders, whether of a historical character or a systematic nature, the IEF meets a variety of cross disciplinary concerns and carries out an effective work in many unconventional theoretical and practical fields which the IEF regards as critical.
Paying particular attention to the phenomena and problems of our age, aiming at offering a sensitive reply to contemporary challenges while instigating and furthering reflection on these, the IEF provides all teachers, students, and those interested with an extended array of different activities.
Of all the interdisciplinary crossroads that imply caring for the ways humans think, do, and act, emphasis is placed upon the strata of health, social work, the environment and the prospects of ecology, politics and law, digital society with its many challenges, plus heritage and curatorship, backed up at all times by research involving tradition, as well as by an eye for the contemporary.
Acknowledged for a high standard of internationalization, the IEF also runs a publishing activity opened to the whole community in an easily accessible manner, in pursuit of meeting the current demand for sedulous and rigorous thinking, while also translating some of its finest research.
The IEF sponsors the training of younger researchers, encourages master's and doctoral degrees, and hosts post-doctoral projects in numerous branches of Philosophy.
All those who are interested are welcome.
