On 29 May 1956, the new and emblematic building of the Faculty of Medicine was inaugurated on Rua Larga, next to the Paço das Escolas. In 1986, with the construction of the new Coimbra University Hospital (HUC) in Celas, it abandoned the premises of the former Colleges of Arts and St Jerome, which it had occupied since 1852. In the 1970s, the FMUC decided to create a degree programme in Dental Medicine, which came into operation in the 1985/86 academic year. To meet this new challenge, the Department of Dental Medicine, Stomatology and Maxillofacial Surgery was set up in the 1990s on the HUC site in Celas.

The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra (FMUC) has as its main mission, and commitment, academic and clinical training of excellence in Medicine and Dentistry, which has allowed it, through an integrated and multidisciplinary training strategy, to train highly qualified professionals. In addition, FMUC has a strong and consolidated offer in different areas of the Health Sciences, namely at the level of the 3rd cycle (doctorate), integrated master's degrees, advanced training courses and specialised master's degrees.

As a cutting-edge medical school, FMUC provides a stimulating scientific environment for carrying out excellent biomedical research, promoting synergies between basic and clinical areas. To this end, it provides access to research infrastructures and state-of-the-art technological platforms, which allow for the development of highly differentiated and competitive research projects. The teaching provided by the FMUC, through its Services, Institutes and Clinics, is spread across Pole I, in the old Rua Larga building, and the Health Sciences Pole (Pole III) where the Coimbra Institute for Clinical and Biomedical Research (ICBR) and the Centre for Research into the Environment, Genetics and Oncobiology (CIMAGO) are located. Clinical teaching takes place mainly at the Coimbra Hospital and University Centre (CHUC), whose physical, technical and scientific proximity to the FMUC guarantees unique conditions for interaction and integration of clinical teaching and research. The management bodies and technical support services are located in the Central Unit building. The Dental Medicine Area has its own facilities integrated into the CHUC, where, in addition to theoretical and practical simulation classes, the strong clinical training component of the Integrated Master's Degree in Dental Medicine takes place.
