About Us - FMUC

Historical review

Founded in 1290 by King Dinis, the University of Coimbra is the oldest in Portugal and one of the oldest in Europe, having had a Faculty of Medicine since its foundation. The Faculty of Medicine of Coimbra (FMUC) remained the only medical school in Portugal until 1825, when the Medical and Surgical Schools of Lisbon and Oporto were created and became Faculties in 1911, when the respective universities were created.
