History

History of the Laboratory of Flow Cytometry Institute of Immunology Faculty of Medicine, University of Coimbra

In the 1980s, the Immunology Institute, then known as the Immunology Center, focused on implementing cutting-edge diagnostic methodologies, with nephelometry being one of the first techniques introduced. During the 1990s, under the leadership of Professor Manuel Santos Rosa, the institute continued its expansion, introducing flow cytometry in 1991. This revolutionary technology had emerged in the 1970s, and by acquiring its first flow cytometer, the FACStar™, the institute brought this powerful tool for individual cell analysis, particularly of immune cells, to its research capabilities.

The institute kept pace with the advancing technology, acquiring a FACSCalibur™ in 1996, which enabled the detection of up to four colors. In 2010 and 2011, two additional flow cytometers were introduced, FACSCanto II™ and FACSAria III™, capable of detecting eight colors, with one also offering cell sorting capabilities. These upgrades significantly enhanced the institute's analytical capacity, allowing for more complex and detailed investigations.

Today, the Immunology Institute continues to develop new techniques and collaborates with a vast network of national and international researchers. Under the direction of Professor Helena Sá since 2022, the institute remains dedicated to its mission of innovation, education, and translational research.
