Incoming-Studies
Students from higher education institutions with or without bilateral agreements, depending on the mobility programme, or special cases (Free Mover), subject to acceptance by the FMUC, can apply.
FMUC accepts study mobility, internships (curricular, extracurricular and recent graduates), under the ERASMUS+ Programme, Agreements, Almeida Garrett Programme (national mobility) and Free Mover applications.
The University of Coimbra does not require language certificates. However, level B2 in Portuguese is recommended to ensure a good understanding of classes and assessments.
For study mobility, the home institution must nominate the selected students and send the nomination to the FMUC’s International Relations Office, through EWP or by email.
The student fills in the online application form at Inforestudante.
Application deadlines vary depending on the programme and academic year and should be announced by the University of Coimbra’s International Relations Unit.
The rules applicable to incoming students for study mobility follow the limits defined for outgoing students, with some adjustments.
According to the regulations, outgoing students can enrol up to 30 ECTS per semester, unless they are attending a Portuguese language course.
- 30 ECTS for a one-semester mobility (1st or 2nd semester);
- 60 ECTS for an annual mobility;
Students cannot exceed the defined number of credits.
At the end of the mobility period, the International Relations Office of the FMUC issues a Transcript of Records certifying the course units taken and assessments, and these units are recognised in accordance with the mobility agreement.
Yes. Changes to the study plan by incoming students are permitted. Students have up to one month after their arrival at the FMUC to request the desired changes.
No. The University of Coimbra does not offer scholarships to incoming mobility students.
Students should request information from their home institution regarding matters related to the awarding of scholarships.
Yes. Students may withdraw from the mobility programme. However, withdrawal must be written and communicated to the FMUC’s International Relations Office via email to grii@fmed.uc.pt, as soon as possible.
After the application has been approved, the University of Coimbra will issue the letter of acceptance to the student via Inforestudante.
When applying to Inforestudante, the student indicates the desired subjects. Enrolment at the FMUC is done when the student attends the Welcome Session organised by the International Relations Unit (mandatory).
Yes. If the FMUC offers subjects in English and these are included in the approved mobility agreement/study plan, provided that the language requirements are met.
Mobility students, within the scope of their studies, are subject to the same rules and regulations applied to regular FMUC students.
Suppose a student fails a subject in a semester during the designated exam periods. In that case, the student will not be able to repeat the subject in the following semester, and the failure will be recorded and issued in the Transcript of Records.
According to the regulations and considering that virtual mobility is not possible, only doctoral students or researchers can undertake short-term mobility (5 to 30 days) for studies or internships at partner Higher Education Institutions or under agreements.
Non-EU students should check the visa or residence permit requirements with the Portuguese authorities or embassies in advance.
Students have school insurance that covers various risks. However, this may not be sufficient if the host institution has to ensure other risks associated with mobility, as it takes place in a hospital setting. In this case, students must obtain their own insurance for this purpose.
The University of Coimbra can provide information and contacts for university residences, but accommodation is the responsibility of the student.
The FMUC organises welcome receptions at the beginning of each semester for exchange students. The Medicine and Dentistry Students’ Unions support students in their social integration and in the events they organise.
Students should familiarise themselves with local public transport and student fares in the city of Coimbra.
As a University of Coimbra student, you are entitled to discounts on public transport.
Incoming students receive a student card, which is essential for accessing the FMUC facilities.
Yes. Incoming students pay a registration fee of €20.
Free Mover students also pay tuition fees depending on the subject(s) they attend (see the Free Mover Regulation).
Yes. To do so, you must formally request an extension. Acceptance of the extension may be subject to review of the study plan and approval by the institutions involved.
Under the ERASMUS Programme, only internship mobility is possible without an agreement.
Outside this programme, you can apply as a Free Mover, subject to prior assessment and acceptance by the FMUC (see the Free Mover Regulation).
Yes. To do so, you must send the International Relations Office the syllabus of the subject(s) for which you wish to obtain equivalence and your academic records, duly signed and stamped by your university. Only official documents from the sending university will be accepted.
The International Relations Office will handle the procedure with the respective Professors and communicate the decision to the students. Until the Head of the Subject has made a decision and the International Relations Office has communicated it, the student must attend the subject(s).
At the end of the mobility period, the FMUC’s IRO will issue the Transcript of Records with the subjects taken, grades and ECTS credits obtained, for subsequent submission to the home institution.

Incoming - Traineeships
Students from higher education institutions with or without bilateral agreements, depending on the mobility programme, or special cases (Free Mover), subject to acceptance by the FMUC, can apply.
FMUC accepts study mobility, internships (curricular, extracurricular and recent graduates), under the ERASMUS+ Programme, Agreements, Almeida Garrett Programme (national mobility) and Free Mover applications.
For internship mobility, level B2 in English is recommended for students who do not speak Portuguese.
For internship mobility, the home institution must nominate the selected students and send the nomination to the FMUC’s International Relations Office by email, with the following information:
- student's full name;
- student's email address;
- clinical areas the student wishes to attend;
- exact period (start and end dates) for each area the student wishes to attend.
When it comes to internship mobility, the FMUC’s International Relations Office will send the end-of-mobility documents, After the Mobility, to both the home institution and the student
In the case of internship mobility, after the student has agreed to the plan presented by the International Relations Office, no changes are permitted once accepted and confirmed by the hospital wards
After the Hospital wards have accepted the internship(s) requested by the FMUC’s International Relations Office, in accordance with the student's requests, the Head of the ward appoints a tutor to supervise the internship and validate the activity plan.
No. The University of Coimbra does not offer scholarships to incoming mobility students.

Internships attended under the internship mobility programme will be in English, except for students who are fluent in Portuguese.
In internship mobility programmes, assessment is the responsibility of the student's tutor, who must complete an Assessment Form, previously sent to the student by the International Relations Office.
