Pathology - Work Flow

The Histopathology Laboratory has gained high quality reputation for preparing excellent formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded Hematoxylin and Eosin stained sections as well as with Histochemistry.

Histopathology Laboratory processes more than 8,000 formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue blocks per year, in parallel with cytopathology slides and immunohistochemistry platform for antibodies afferition.

A wide range of specimens are handled in the laboratory including bone marrow biopsies, surgical resections and biopsies, dermatology biopsies, outside blocks sent in consultation, and a wide variety of experimental research specimens.

IAP-PM has been the Reference Laboratory of the Center of Portugal for the Screening of Colorectal Carcinoma in Portugal, since 2009.

- The Immunohistochemistry Laboratory performs immunohistochemistry (IHC) tests for clinical diagnosis and research projects in an open automated immunohistochemistry stainer.

- Specimens are received from surgical pathology, bone marrow, cytology, experimental pathology and consultative practice. Testing is focused on diagnostic protein (antigens) markers and predictive/prognostic markers.

- The Laboratory has an active test development initiative conducted by experienced scientific staff and led by the Lab Directors.

- Constant afferition of human and animal immunohistochemistry antibodies are developed in an automated autostainer as well as in manual way.
