Biomonitoring Anastomotic Leakage with Electronic Tattoos: An Advanced Approach in Abdominal Surgery

BioTat – Biomonitoring Anastomotic Leakage with Electronic Tattoos: An Advanced Approach in Abdominal Surgery

Abstract

The BioTat project proposes the development of an innovative biomedical device for real-time monitoring of anastomotic leaks after colon surgeries. Through this device, which integrates reduced graphene oxide sensors and RFID technology, the aim is to detect post-operative complications early, without the need for batteries. This approach will enable faster clinical interventions, reduction of prolonged hospitalizations, and improvement of surgical/clinical outcomes.

The team involved in the project brings together multidisciplinary expertise in the areas of medicine, biomedical engineering, electronics, and animal experimentation, involving teams from the Institute of Biophysics of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra, the Soft and Printed Microelectronics laboratory of the Institute of Systems and Robotics of the University of Coimbra, and the Portuguese Institute of Oncology of Coimbra. The development of the device will be accompanied by a rigorous evaluation of its biocompatibility and performance through in vitro and in vivo studies, in accordance with international standards for the biological evaluation of medical devices (ISO 10993), ensuring the scientific robustness and safety of the device. The final objective is to validate a functional prototype with clinical translation potential, capable of transforming surgical practice and post-operative care.
