Low Literacy at PlayLOLit – Low Literacy at Play |
Abstract
In Europe, 80 million people have low literacy, and among people over 55, the percentage of people with low literacy is the highest. Low literacy is linked to wrong and harmful behavior in health-related issues, less participation in society and a lower quality of life and well-being. Many seniors with low literacy levels show resistance to learning, identifying issues related to anxiety, communication problems and social isolation as their main concerns.
The LOLit project aimed to bridge this gap by focusing on the learning needs of seniors with low literacy and thus reduce socio-economic disparities. The project had three main objectives: to develop a flexible learning approach for seniors, to provide tools adapted to seniors with low literacy levels so that they can access information effectively and, finally, to raise awareness among adult education professionals. The “Healthy ageing through play!” game was created using educational cards using the collaborative learning method in a fun, interactive format that is tailored to people's needs. In the mini-course, which lasts around eight sessions, seniors interact based on themes such as: how my body ages, nutrition, social involvement (well-being), digital security and being listened to by others. The cards, developed in collaboration (co-creation) with people over 50 with low literacy skills, offer a fun and accessible way to share experiences, learn and build social contacts.
