University of Coimbra Herbarium featured in international open science publication
The article “Wikidata for Botanists: Benefits of collaborating and sharing Linked Open Data”, recently published in the prestigious journal Annals of Botany, highlights the benefits of using Wikidata to structure and connect botanical information. The paper is the result of an international collaboration between four researchers from New Zealand, Germany, and Portugal — including Joaquim Santos, data manager at the Herbarium of the University of Coimbra.
The work originated from a workshop held at the XX International Botanical Congress (Madrid, 2024), where the team trained over 20 botanists to enhance Wikidata’s coverage of botany-related topics. The paper emphasizes the value of open digital tools for advancing botany and achieving the goals of the Madrid Declaration for Botany.
