The fifth session of the 2025 iiiUC Training - Research Support Tools is dedicated to Communicating science through audiovisual content: the use of Video Abstracts. The training will be led by Miguel Ferreira, Science Communicator and Researcher at the Science Management and Communication Office of the Centre for Functional Ecology (CFE), Department of Life Sciences at the University of Coimbra.

For more than a century, researchers have used audiovisual media to communicate science, not only as a research tool but also as a teaching and dissemination tool for non-specialized audiences. With the advent of the internet and new technologies, this potential was reinforced, opening the way to new forms of interaction and more diverse audiences.

Video abstract - an audiovisual presentation of a scientific article - stands out among the various media resources available. This type of content can take on different styles and approaches, offering multiple advantages in science communication.

This training session aims to explore the universe of science videos, focusing on video abstracts. Using several practical examples, the main stages of the production process will be presented, from the conception and writing of the script, through recording and editing, to final dissemination. Good practices, strategies and useful tips will also be shared to enhance the effectiveness of this content.

This training will take place on June 26th, 2025 at 2:30 pm.

This iiiUC event is online, in Portuguese and open to the entire University of Coimbra community.
