In June 2023, during the celebrations of the 10th anniversary of the inclusion of the University of Coimbra on the UNESCO World Heritage List, the first institutional steps were taken to reflect on how to approach the colonial dimensions of its heritage and the best ways to deal with them.
In response to this initiative, twelve professors and researchers formed an ad hoc working group to prepare a proposal report on the topic. In early March 2025, the report was presented to the Rector, who decided to use it as a basis for internal discussion and future decisions. It was submitted for debate at the University Senate meeting held on May 21. After being shared with the faculties and other bodies within the university, their feedback can help continue the discussion in order to shape the policies the University will adopt on this matter.
The document, which we share here, is divided into two parts: the first suggests a set of principles and 15 actions; the second offers a brief overview of the current state of art to support the proposals. The topic was featured in Público newspaper on May 22, in two articles that we also share here, as they provide an initial external view.
Meanwhile, UNESCO Chair Patrimónios, which supported the development of this process in line with its action plan for the second four-year term, is holding meetings with its network of partners in former Portuguese colonies, to encourage their participation in this discussion — as that conversation must not be limited to the Global North.
