The Re.Data project kicked off in January with the aim of establishing and operationalising the Portuguese Network to Support the Management and Opening of Research Data. Re.Data is a consortium designed to promote the implementation of the National Open Science and Open Research Data Programme (PNCA DAI) promoted by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), including the necessary coordination with data management centres, to foster national and institutional action strategies that develop a national research data culture aligned with the FAIR data principles to converge with the EOSC.

The consortium is made up of five organisations, coordinated by the University of Minho, in partnership with the University of Coimbra, and with the participation of ISCTE-Instituto Universitário de Lisboa, Instituto Politécnico de Bragança and Universidade Nova de Lisboa.

The project kicked off at the consortium's general coordination meeting on January 10, with an action plan covering three areas of intervention: developing institutional policies for Open Science and the Management and Opening of Research Data; developing a professional training and capacity-building programme for researchers, including the creation of the Data Stewards Network; and co-developing materials and support services for data curation and FAIR data, including data protection, as well as providing a robust support service.

The project's work plan will run until the end of 2025, ensuring the creation and development of a training infrastructure and support services for the curation and opening up of research data in Portugal. The activity plan to establish and operationalise the Portuguese network to support the Management and Opening of Research Data is based on five objectives:

  • Provide a reference framework for institutional policies to guide the implementation of Open Science (OS) and Research Data Management (RDM) strategies, promoting policy alignment through the operation of a national special interest group for OS policies and the involvement of leadership.
  • Develop a professional training programme for data curators, repository managers and data stewards and establish the Capacity Building Centre as a common space for the improvement of RDM skills, including the creation and operation of the data stewards network.
  • Co-develop a set of reference materials and support services for data curation and FAIR data, including data protection, the collection of best practices and use case narratives, the building of a knowledge base based on contributions from networks of RDM centres, as well as the provision of a robust support service.
  • Co-design and establish three competence centres that support the implementation of institutional policies, training and skills development, data curation and publication support guidance, through a strong communication and liaison strategy, ensuring a support network for the RDM centres.
  • Develop a community governance model for the Network and investigate how it can be aligned with FCT's national programme for open science and open research data.
