The University of Coimbra attended the opening meeting of the SCIROS project (Strategic Collaboration for Interdisciplinary Research on Open Science in the Social Sciences and Humanities), held at the Staszic Palace in Warsaw on 4 and 5 November 2024. The project, integrated by UC, aims to strengthen research into open science in the social sciences and humanities.

SCIROS is coordinated by the Digital Humanities Centre of the Institute of Literary Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences (CHC IBL PAN), and is funded by the Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange, lasting 24 months. Its main goal is to establish a research network in open science, promoting lasting collaboration between institutions based on exchanges of researchers and international and local events.

In the first phase of the project, the IBL PAN research team will explore the experiences of the partners and the potential synergies between institutions during a series of study visits. These visits will be dedicated to mapping relevant projects, methodology and researchers with experience in Open Science, including its ethical, social and economic dimensions. The second phase will consist of workshops and conferences organised in cooperation with the project partners and other interested parties (academic institutions, libraries and publishers).

During the kick-off meeting, future activities were discussed, including study visits to partner institutions, which will culminate in local workshops. The UC is due to host one of these visits in 2025.

The meeting's participants (UC was represented by Licínia Ferreira, from DPQ, and Maria Olímpia Especiosa, from CECH) took part in three workshops, which began with a presentation of each institution's contribution to Open Science and culminated in the definition of themes that will guide the activities of future project meetings.
