Energy Box is a research project promoted by the Institute for Computers and Systems Engineering at Coimbra (INESC Coimbra) and MIT, financed by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology for the period 2010-2013, in the framework of the MIT Portugal Program.
The Energy Box project intends to develop and implement in practice the concept of Energy Box proposed by Livengood and Larson (2009) as a 24/7 background processor operating on a local computer or in a remote location to manage in an intelligent manner, that is, responding to price signals, comfort requirements, etc., one’s home or small business electrical energy use.
The assembled team of multidisciplinary
researchers includes experts on researchers from the Faculties of Sciences and Technology, Economics, and Psychology of the University of Coimbra, as well as the Polytechnic Institute of Coimbra. The leader of the Portuguese team is Professor Carlos Henggeler Antunes (Dept. of Electrical Engineering and Computers, University of Coimbra, and R&D unit INESC Coimbra). The leader of the MIT team is Professor Richard Larson (Engineering Systems Division). The common interests in the application of operations research models and techniques in the energy sector is a major cornerstone of this project.
