Margarida Vale de Gato was born in 1973 in Vendas Novas. She is a translator, writer, and professor at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon and a researcher at the Centre for Anglistic Studies at the same institution. She translated many authors into Portuguese: Henri Michaux, Nathalie Sarraute, René Char, Edgar Allan Poe, Herman Melville, Charles Dickens, Mark Twain, W. B. Yeats, Marianne Moore, Jack Kerouac, Sharon Olds, Alice Munro, Louise Glück, among other authors. She received her doctorate in 2008 with a thesis on the reception of Edgar Allan Poe in Portuguese poetry in the second half of the 19th century. She has published essays within her areas of expertise, such as Translated Poe and Anthologizing Poe (co-organized with Emron Esplin, 2014 and 2020). Her literary work includes the poetry books Lançamento (2016), the theatre play Desligar e Voltar a Ligar (with Rui Costa, 2011) and Mulher ao Mar. The latter is a poetic project with periodic updates (Mulher ao Mar Retorna in 2013; Mulher ao Mar e Grinalda in 2018; Mulher ao Mar Brasil in 2021). Mulher ao Mar e Corsárias (2023) is her latest incarnation.
