Small volume (17.7 × 12.8 cm) with a yellow paper-covered binding (the Faculty of Medicine’s colour), used to record the absences of students enrolled in the 1862–1863 academic year.
Although not one of the University of Coimbra Archive’s (AUC) greatest treasures, its uniqueness, together with the rarity of such small volumes, makes it valuable for the information it contains. Similar volumes existed for every academic year and across all Faculties, but only a few have survived.
The ink drawing depicts the god Asclepius who, in Greek and Roman mythology, symbolises medicine and healing, holding a staff around which a serpent is entwined.
This volume also features a list of the names of all professors, together with their respective addresses, as well as a calendar showing dissertation submission deadlines for the various courses.
