Carbon coating of samples for SEM imaging/analysis

For non-conductive samples for which a metallic coating may be undesirable (for example, by interfering with SEM/EDS analyses), there is the alternative of coating the samples with a thin carbon film, obtained by evaporating a carbon fiber.

The instrument that performs this type of coating consists of an evaporation chamber where there is a heater for the carbon fiber to evaporate, which works together with the mini-sputter coatter.
