/ Performance Appraisal

ADDUC

Faculty of the University of Coimbra are subject to a performance appraisal procedure, as laid down in Regulation no. 398/2010 of 5 May (Regulation on the Performance Appraisal of the Teaching Staff of the University of Coimbra - RADDUC), as amended by Order no. 12404/2022.

The performance appraisal of teaching staff is subject to the principles set out in Article 74-A of the University Teaching Career Statute (ECDU), as amended by Decree-Law no. 205/2009 of 31 August and Law no. 8/2010 of 13 May.

This evaluation system applies to all career teachers at the University of Coimbra, is carried out every three years and refers to the performance of the three full calendar years immediately preceding the year in which it is conducted.

This appraisal takes place between January and June of the year immediately following the three-year period under evaluation and evaluates the following components:

  • Research;
  • Teaching;
  • Knowledge transfer and valorisation;
  • University management and other duties.

In turn, each component is assessed by a set of metrics which are fully described in the Annex to the RADDUC.

A positive rating in the performance appraisal is one of the requirements for:

a) Indefinite employment contracts for assistant professors;

b) Change of pay step within the category held (only applicable to career teaching staff).

Applicable legislation

  • Teaching Career Statute (ECDU) as amended by Decree-Law no. 205/2009 of 31 August and Law no. 8/2010 of 13 May;
  • Regulation no. 398/2010, of 5 May - Regulation on the Performance Appraisal of Teaching Staff at the University of Coimbra (RADDUC), as amended by Order no. 12404/2022;
  • Regulation No. 19/2011 of 11 January - Regulation on the Changes in the Pay Step of the Career Teaching Staff of the University of Coimbra (RAPRDCUC)
  • Rector's Order no. 143/2018, of 14 August 2018.

Regular Performance Appraisal

A teaching staff member will be evaluated under this procedure if he/she has performed duties (actual service) for at least eighteen months during the three-year period under review, otherwise, this period will be assessed together with the following three-year period.

This rule is based on the principle that the employee must have a minimum period of time to carry out the duties foreseen in the teaching career in order to be able to include these activities in the appraisal process.

Appraisal by Curricular Weighting

Faculty will be evaluated by curricular weighting whenever it is not possible to carry out the evaluation according to the general procedures (regular appraisal) and provided that the Scientific Council of the organic unit involved deems this type of assessment to be justified.

This assessment procedure also applies if the teacher has been unable to carry out his/her duties for a period of eighteen months or more during the three-year period under review for any reason, such as illness.

This appraisal consists of an assessment of the performance of the faculty during the period under review, based on the criteria defined in Article 3 of Regulation No. 398/2010 of 5 May - Regulations for the Performance Appraisal of Teaching Staff at the University of Coimbra (RADDUC) and the criteria defined by the Scientific Council of each Organic Unit, which differ from the criteria defined for the regular performance appraisal as they focus on a more qualitative approach.
