Participating institutions
The Centre for Studies in Geography and Spatial Planning (CEGOT) is a scientific research unit focused on the production and dissemination of knowledge in different areas of Geography. Formally recognised by the Foundation for Science and Technology since 2008, it results from the cooperation of the Geography Departments of the University of Coimbra and the University of Porto.
CEGOT currently brings together 161 researchers and is organised around three research groups:
- Nature and environmental dynamics
- Cities and territorial development
- Tourism, heritage, and territory.
Most CEGOT members are geographers, but the centre has been attracting a growing number of researchers trained in planning, architecture, sociology, economics, engineering, public health and tourism, reinforcing its multidisciplinary nature. At their core, CEGOT researchers share the view that tackling contemporary societal challenges requires collaborative research, anchored in geographical development perspectives.
CINTESIS – Center for Research in Health Technologies and Services is a large Research and Development Unit (R&D) whose mission is to find answers and solutions, in the short term, to specific health problems, without ever losing sight of the cost/performance ratio. efficiency. Headquartered at the University of Porto, CINTESIS is proud of its multicentric, decentralized and flexible nature, with a structure that includes 46 partner institutions (29 higher education institutions, 12 hospitals/health institutions and 5 health companies) and centers in 6 higher education institutions, more specifically in 5 Universities (University of Porto, New University of Lisbon, University of Aveiro, University of Algarve, University of Madeira) and 1 Polytechnic (Porto School of Nursing).
In total, the center brings together more than 600 researchers, in 24 research groups that work in 3 main thematic lines: Preventive Medicine & Societal Challenges (TL1), Clinical and Translational Research (TL2) and Data Science, Decision & Technologies of Information (TL3).
Over its more than 50 years of existence, the National School of Public Health (ENSP-NOVA) has played a leading role in the development of Public Health science. Through a consolidated and diversified training offer, in a student-centred teaching, in close articulation with research and with a strong connection to practice, the School has promoted, since its creation, the training of a critical mass of highly differentiated professionals. These professionals are distinguished by their technical, scientific and transversal skills and their ability to act, in different sectors, on the most complex public health issues, in a global context in permanent change.
ENSP develops research of quality and excellence with national and international relevance. The School leads and participates in competitive research projects, in a research culture guided by current and future challenges in public health, with a focus on innovation and societal impact. The production of evidence at the service of improving the health and well-being of populations and strengthening health systems is a distinctive feature of the School, with the priority being to translate evidence into adapted and replicable solutions in different real contexts, from local to global.
ENSP-NOVA is committed to the mission of serving the community, through institutional cooperation and intersectoral partnerships, in strengthening skills and lifelong learning, as well as in the design, implementation and evaluation of health interventions and policies, among others. others.

Alzheimer Portugal Association is the largest Portuguese association supporting people living with dementia and their caregivers. The Association has participated in several scientific research projects, and develops a range of support initiatives. It has published several guides and recommendations for caregivers.

The National Association for the Support of the Elderly (ANAI), created in 1994, aims to promote the protection and support of older people through information, personalised assistance and appropriate referrals. It also guarantees the quality of the services it promotes and the development and well-being of the users it hosts. In recent years, ANAI has developed many initiatives and projects, including a technical assistance bank or Free Time Universities.
The National Association of Informal Caregivers (ANCI) aims to defend the interests of informal caregivers and democratic activity for the definition and application of public policies, namely the Statute of Informal Caregivers. This organisation has claimed the fight for the dignity of informal caregivers and aims to encourage dialogue and collaboration for a fair and supportive society. In recent years, the ANCI has developed several initiatives and participated in multiple projects (Saúde no Bairro, workshops, support and training actions for caregivers, creation of Caregiver Support Offices in collaboration with local authorities) to promote community literacy and respect the role of informal caregivers; promote the dissemination of knowledge, experiences and good practices for informal caregivers; and develop and promote activities aimed at improving the quality of life and reducing the perception of burden on informal caregivers, disseminating support services and prioritizing the needs and rights of informal caregivers.
The Support Association for Caregivers of Dependent People (APACID) is a non-profit organisation that provides comprehensive support to caregivers. It seeks to promote the health and well-being of caregivers through an individualised assessment and intervention that meets the particular needs of each caregiver and the family situation/disease.
Maior Idade is one of the intervention areas of the Municipality of Ílhavo, whose main target is the population aged 60 years or over, and one of its most important objectives is to keep the older people active in their community. In order to fulfill these objectives, a series of projects and initiatives are promoted throughout the year, such as theater projects, festivals, art workshops, support services, geriatric parks and support for physical activity, many of them in active partnership with other institutions in Ílhavo municipality. Maior Idade recently created the Ageing Laboratory, an innovative and unique project in Portugal, whose main objective is to increase knowledge about the ageing process. To fulfill this purpose, it brings together academic partners, technology companies, social partners, artistic partners and older people.
The Virtual Institute for Good Health and Well-Being (GLADE) was created under the auspices of the EC2U Alliance, a multicultural and multilingual alliance co-funded by the Erasmus+ Program of the European Union (https://ec2u.eu/), which aims to develop a innovative space that allows free circulation between seven European Universities: Coimbra (Portugal), Iaşi (Romania), Jena (Germany), Pavia (Italy), Poitiers (France), Salamanca (Spain), Turku (Finland). It develops specific approaches in education, research, innovation and transfer of services to the community in the long term, and aims to generate relevant knowledge that can inform the design of guidelines that can leverage and foster innovative City-University collaborations and partnerships (between universities, municipal councils , health authorities, NGOs), with the potential to promote healthy environments and increase opportunities for good health and well-being for all.
The Portuguese Network of Healthy Municipalities (RPMS) was created in 1997. As an association of municipalities, its mission is to support and promote local strategies that favour health gains and to encourage and intensify cooperation and communication between the municipalities of the Network and the others. networks participating in the World Health Organization (WHO) Healthy Cities project. The Network currently includes 64 Portuguese municipalities.
