The worst atrocities and the most important technological breakthroughs in human history took place in a single century.
It was at the University of Coimbra that Professor Egas Moniz, the only Portuguese to have won the Nobel Prize for Medicine, obtained his doctorate and that the first elected President of the Portuguese Republic served as Rector.
In the same period that saw the democratic transformation of education in Europe and Portugal, the University of Coimbra confirmed its great prestige, the result not only of a unique past but also of the laborious task of constantly adapting to a rapidly changing world.
Today, the UC is a true icon of Portugal, not only in Europe and the Portuguese-speaking countries but also in the world.
