New opportunities for Brazilian researchers to collaborate with ERC-funded teams in Europe

23 january, 2025≈ 3 min read

On December 11, 2024, the European Commission and the Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) signed an agreement to enable Brazilian researchers to participate in projects funded by the European Research Council (ERC).

This new Implementing Arrangement allows Brazilian researchers to undertake research visits lasting 6 to 12 months, collaborating with ERC-funded teams in Europe. Only researchers with a doctoral degree and supported by CNPq can take part in the programme. The visits will follow the CNPq’s guidelines for postdoctoral scholarships, including the associated benefits.

Operational steps to establish the cooperation:

  • The European Research Council Executive Agency (ERCEA) solicits expressions of interest from Principal Investigators (PIs) holding ERC grants in hosting CNPq grantees/fellows to contribute to their teams.
  • The ERCEA sends to CNPq a listing of the interested PIs/teams, along with the publishable description of their ERC-funded projects and any additional information agreed upon by the CNPq and the ERCEA to facilitate collaborations.

  • The CNPq will inform Brazilian researchers about the collaboration opportunity by publishing a call for proposals. This announcement will outline the goals of the postdoctoral programme and provide information on ERC-funded projects open to collaboration. Eligible researchers in Brazil can then apply to this public call.

  • Selected CNPq grantees/fellows will be invited to communicate directly with the ERC-funded teams to negotiate collaboration terms and conditions, in accordance with the ERC grant agreement, before submitting their proposal to the CNPq call.
