Mercadinho da Margem Esquerda to take place on September 14th
The Mercadinhos da Margem Esquerda (Left Bank Markets), an initiative of the UC Exploratório in partnership with the Parish Union of Santa Clara and Castelo de Viegas, the University of Coimbra's Office for Sustainable Development and Coimbra Mais Futuro, returns for its ninth edition this Sunday, 14 September, in the UC Exploratório Boulevard, between 10h00 and 18h00. Admission is free.
The Mercadinhos da Margem Esquerda are back, now every second Sunday of the month. In September, the meeting is scheduled for next Sunday, the 14th, in the UC Exploratório boulevard, between 10am and 6pm, in an event that will feature the usual presentation and sale of fresh and cooked food products and a connection to science.
At the dozens of stalls set up along the UC Exploratório Alameda, everyone will be able to find fresh seasonal fruit and vegetables, certified organic produce, small-scale family farming or responsible agriculture, micro-vegetables, mushrooms produced in oak sawdust at the UC Exploratório Fungi Lab, salt from Figueira da Foz, flowers, sourdough bread, honey from Lousã, different regional products and, as usual, artisan ice creams, among many other products and some new additions. Come and find out more about what you're eating!
We will once again offer all visitors the opportunity to participate in workshops with Filipa Ramos. This time, we will be making cereal bars, a great snack to take in lunchboxes, plant-based, free from refined sugars and dairy products. Participation is free, but subject to registration on the day and limited to available places.
EUVG - Vasco da Gama University School will be at the Mercadinhos da Margem Esquerda, through the Pet Lab project, with the Pet Clinic activity. In this recreation of a veterinary clinic, designed mainly for children but open to the whole family, participants can bring their stuffed animal (preferably a dog or cat) and experience what it is like to care for the health of pets. This activity will be led by EUVG Veterinary Doctor and lecturer Joana Gibson, EUVG lecturer Mark Gibson and students from the EUVG Student Association, who will provide an engaging educational experience.
At the suggestion of Sustento by Green2You, there will be a free olive oil soap workshop outside the grocery store. This activity is free to attend and participants will be able to take home the soap they make (limited to existing stock). Throughout the day, Verde Naïf brand products will be on display in the same space.
The Mercadinhos da Margem Esquerda will once again feature artists working live on their pieces, which will also be available for purchase.
The Mercadinhos da Margem Esquerda are based on a collaborative and experimental spirit, involving social organisations from Coimbra with their own agricultural produce. They fit in with the UC Exploratório - Centro Ciência Viva da Universidade de Coimbra's aim of helping to engage the public with science in a practical and meaningful way, bringing local producers closer to a public interested in learning more about what they consume.
