The Sustainable Campus Network, created during the Sustainable Campus meeting, promoted and hosted by the University of Coimbra in 2018 in the scope of the Energy for Sustainability Initiative, is a cooperation network that unites higher education institutions around the implementation of the principles and practices of sustainable development in environmental, social and economic aspects, promoting sustainability issues in Portuguese universities and polytechnic institutes, thus contributing to a more sustainable society.
The main goals of the Sustainable Campus Network are the sharing of knowledge, initiatives and success stories and also the promotion of joint actions within the scope of sustainable campus.
The interventions of the Sustainable Campus Network can be implemented in different forms and contexts, ideally based on a holistic and integrated approach that UNESCO calls a Whole-School approach. Considering this integrative perspective, as well as the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals Agenda, the Network's activities can fall into six major dimensions:
In 2019 took place the first Sustainable Campus Conference in Portugal, in which the University of Coimbra, together with 27 more Portuguese higher education institutions, signed a letter of intent for a sustainable campus - "Commitment of Higher Education Institutions to Sustainable Development" (available in Portuguese here).
This letter stands for an institutional commitment, individual and collective, with the principles and practices towards a sustainable development.
