SDG 14 | Life Below Water

Our commitment

  • To be a Nature Positive University dedicated to addressing its impacts and influence on nature in such a way that it monitors them and acts on the results to promote the conservation and restoration of aquatic ecosystems, based on the mitigation and conservation hierarchy, preventing risks, mitigating negative impacts and promoting positive impacts in institutional action. This includes protecting species indicated as threatened on conservation lists and controlling invasive species.

  • By assuming the 6Rs - reduce, reuse, recycle, rethink, redesign and re-educate - as pillars in the transition to a circular economy, the University of Coimbra is committed to reducing marine pollution by implementing effective practices to control pollutants and waste that can reach the seas and oceans. The implementation of waste management practices at University of Coimbra prevents the disposal of plastics and other pollutants in waterways, with the aim of protecting marine ecosystems and promoting environmental sustainability.

  • Investing in research dedicated to marine ecosystems and developing effective methods for monitoring and assessing the health of oceans and coastal areas.
