The UC has Research and Development Units that play a fundamental role in the creation of scientific knowledge, technological innovation and advanced training.

The University of Coimbra strategic areas concern Health; Climate, Energy and Mobility; Natural Resources, Agrifood and Environment; Digital, Industry and Space; and Heritage, Culture and Inclusive Society. The strategic areas seek to promote communication and dialogue between R&D units, fostering synergies and the fertile crossing of different areas of knowledge, stimulating scientific activity and strengthening the UC's presence in national and international scientific networks, through the development of public and private partnerships, and by strengthening applications for research projects.

UC Business is the Technology Transfer Division (TTO) of the University of Coimbra whose mission is to transform the UC into an essential partner for the business community, carrying out joint projects with different business structures.

The UC has a diverse portfolio of accumulated patents, which can be consulted in the Management and Accounts Reports.

The Pedro Nunes Institute (IPN), created on the initiative of the University of Coimbra in 1991, is a private non-profit organisation that aims to promote innovation and technology transfer, establishing links between the scientific and technological environment and the productive fabric.

The UC is aware of its responsibility to enhance and stimulate its invaluable heritage, and each year various rehabilitation projects are planned, started and/or carried out, demonstrating the commitment and investment made in the institution's infrastructures. For more information, see the Sustainability Reports.

At UC, there are several junior organisations consolidated in the student community dedicated to building projects and providing services to companies, institutions or individual clients. The main aim is to promote student learning through contact with the business community, guaranteeing progress and improving their academic profiles.

The UC, through the Innovation Centre for Biomedicine and Biotechnology (CIBB), is part of the GreenLabs Portugal network, which aims to reduce the ecological footprint through sustainable practices in laboratories.
