The new edition of the World’s Top 2% Scientists List, released annually by Stanford University in collaboration with Elsevier, features 93 scientists from the University of Coimbra (UC) among the most cited in 2024.

Separate data were also published for the career-long impact list, with 62 UC researchers among the most cited throughout their careers.

In both rankings, UC’s presence continues to grow compared to 2023, with two more scientists included in the single-year impact list and ten more in the career-long impact list.

The study was coordinated by John Ioannidis, Professor at Stanford University (USA), who is currently collaborating with UC as leader of the ERA Chair EXCELScIOR.

The team analysed data from 236,313 scientists worldwide for the 2024 single-year impact list and from 230,303 scientists for the career-long impact list.

Compiled by Stanford University using Scopus data provided by Elsevier, the World’s Top 2% Scientists List serves as a powerful tool for identifying global scientific leaders. The results, published annually by Elsevier, take into account the indexing, publications, and citations of scientists worldwide.

Researchers are classified into 22 broad scientific fields and 174 sub-fields, allowing for a comprehensive representation of various disciplines. This classification is based on data from Stanford University and Elsevier, used for the ranking.
