The official opening of the 2025 European Universities Tennis and Padel Championships took place on 29 July at the UC Schools Palace and Courtyard. The Secretary of State for Sport, Pedro Dias, said that "The University of Coimbra (UC) is not only the host of the competitions, but also a symbol of centuries of connection between knowledge, culture and sport".

The 178 athletes, representing 34 higher education institutions and 13 European countries, paraded down the Via Latina staircase and gathered in the historic Schools Patio.

UC Rector Amílcar Falcão highlighted the importance of sport in the university’s mission: “Sport is a strategic pillar for the university and for the development of our students. I hope participants enjoy themselves, make friends and have fun playing tennis and padel.”

The competitions are taking place at the University Stadium (tennis) and at Star Padel Outdoor (padel).

The event is organised by the University of Coimbra (UC), the Academic Association of Coimbra (Coimbra Students’ Union – AAC), the European University Sports Association (EUSA), and the Academic Federation for University Sports (FADU).

Liviu Matac, from the EUSA Executive Committee, described the moment as “inspiring”, saying: “Give your all on the court and compete with both heart and mind.” He also encouraged participants to embrace the experience: “Make this a journey of learning and cultural exchange — and make friends for life.”

Ricardo Nora, President of FADU, recalled that “Coimbra has long been a hub for these events.” The city has previously hosted several international competitions, including the 2010 European Universities Tennis Championship, the 2013 European Universities Judo Championship, the 2017 EUSA Gala and Conference, the 2017 European Universities Judo, Taekwondo, Karate and Table Tennis Championships, and the 2018 European Universities Games.

The Secretary of State also praised the work carried out by the various organisations involved. He stressed that “sport is not just about winning medals – it’s about education, inclusion, social interaction, citizenship, and so much more. It is a powerful driver of both individual and social transformation.”

The championships can be followed on the official social media channels for each sport: Tennis | Padel.
