From grants to affordable meals: SASUC makes a difference in students’ lives
The Social Services of the University of Coimbra (SASUC) play a central role in student life, providing support to thousands of students throughout their academic journey.
For SASUC Administrator Leonardo Vicente, the mission is clear: “We want to create the best conditions for academic success, ensuring multiple forms of support.”
In 2024/2025 alone, more than 4,800 UC students received scholarships from the Directorate-General for Higher Education (DGES). Additional aid includes the University’s Social Support Fund, which covers tuition fees and emergency assistance, and the António Luís Gomes Social Fund, in partnership with the Coimbra Academic Association.
Among indirect support, food provision stands out: SASUC serves nearly 900,000 meals per year, three quarters of them subsidised social meals. UC offers the most affordable social meal in Portuguese higher education institutions at €2.40, including soup, bread, three options for the main course and dessert. In addition to a network of 15 canteens, SASUC manages ten student residences, with more under construction or renovation.
Other services include psychological and pedagogical support, coaching sessions, soft skills training, part-time work opportunities (PASEP), and resources for students with special educational needs. SASUC also provides healthcare services, increasingly sought by international and non-local students, and childcare facilities—rare among Portuguese universities.
Ultimately, UC’s social support strategy goes beyond addressing financial hardship: it fosters equity, inclusion and academic success, reinforcing the University’s pioneering role in social action.
A oferta de serviços complementares inclui apoio psicopedagógico, sessões de coaching, formações em soft skills e o Programa de Apoio Social a Estudantes através de Atividades de Tempo Parcial (PASEP), que permite desenvolver competências e ao mesmo tempo aliviar os encargos financeiros. Há ainda um conjunto de respostas destinadas a estudantes com necessidades educativas específicas, como o centro de produção de materiais acessíveis, pioneiro em várias iniciativas de inclusão académica.
Na área da saúde, os serviços têm registado uma procura significativa, sobretudo entre os estudantes deslocados e internacionais. Já o apoio à infância, disponível em poucas instituições de ensino superior em Portugal, constitui outra marca distintiva dos SASUC. Para o Administrador dos SASUC, “é difícil eleger qual o apoio mais valorizado, mas, em termos de abrangência, a alimentação destaca-se porque serve toda a comunidade académica”.
No final, os apoios sociais da Universidade de Coimbra refletem uma estratégia de intervenção global, que vai além da resposta imediata às dificuldades financeiras: trata-se de criar condições de equidade, inclusão e sucesso académico, fortalecendo a coesão da comunidade estudantil e reforçando o papel da UC como instituição pioneira na área da ação social.
