The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation has opened applications for its Merit Scholarships, designed to support talented young students with limited financial means in their first year of higher education.

This year, more than 600 new scholarships will be awarded to first-year students who achieved an entry score of 170 points or higher in the national admission process and can demonstrate financial need. To verify household income, applicants must also apply for a DGES (Directorate-General for Higher Education) grant, regardless of the income level. Eligible candidates must have an annual per capita household income of less than €14,000.

Each scholarship is worth €2,000 per year and may be renewed until the end of a master’s degree, provided renewal requirements are met. In addition, scholarship holders who spend a semester at a university abroad will receive a one-off extra grant of €2,000.

Applications are open until 31 October. Full details and the application form are available at: https://gulbenkian.pt/bolsas-lista/bolsas-de-merito/

Last year, the Gulbenkian Merit Scholarships supported 1,711 students.
