Parenting in a Changing World: University of Coimbra debates challenges of adolescence
The Parenting Forum ‘Challenges of Adolescence in Today’s World’ highlighted the importance of affection, open communication, and strong family bonds during the transition from adolescence to adulthood.
On 21 June, the University of Coimbra (UC) held the Parenting Forum 'Challenges of Adolescence in Today’s World', bringing together parents, guardians and experts to discuss conscious and nurturing approaches to parenting young people preparing for higher education.
Aimed at families of pre-university students, the event highlighted the importance of affection, active listening, and strong family bonds during this critical transitional stage. Cristina Albuquerque, UC’s Vice-Rector for Education and Attractiveness, highlighted the importance of parental involvement in the educational process, acknowledging adolescence as "a significant challenge for families".
Maria Filomena Gaspar, a lecturer at the UC Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences, pointed to the increasing demands of this phase, shaped by early decision-making and the dynamics of a “VUCA” world – volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous. She emphasised that teenagers need a sense of belonging and space to assert themselves, and encouraged parents to view withdrawal or silence not as rejection, but as part of that process.
The forum addressed themes such as empathetic communication, parental self-care and affectionate guidance. UC plans to continue and expand this initiative, supporting more conscious parenting and a smoother academic transition.
