The movement of suitcases and luggage at the students’ residence at Campus II‑ Polo II-2. does not go unnoticed. This Sunday, 7 September, University of Coimbra (UC) students arrived to settle into their accommodation for the new academic year. The UC Social Services (SASUC) seized the occasion to revive the “Open Day” and showcase the university residences to students and their families.

"It's much more spacious than I expected," commented Margarida Barreiro, who was delighted to see her room at residence Polo II-2, which has plenty of natural light, is modern and even has a balcony — a real bonus. Margarida, a Master's student in Ecology, is just a two-minute walk from her classes. Her mother, Amélia Barreiro, was impressed by the affordable, comfortable accommodation compared with city rentals. “I’m glad she has a place here. It’s pleasant and spacious,” says her mother. She also notes the improved storage and communal areas compared with previous shared housing.

“Open Day gives families the chance to see where their children will live and to familiarise themselves with the support available,” explains Leonardo Martins, SASUC Administrator. “Leaving home is a big step for students, so touring the residences helps reassure parents.”

With a total of almost 1,000 beds across seven residences, capacity is almost full. Most students have already arrived in Coimbra for Welcome and Integration Week, which runs from 8 to 12 September.
