Gabrielle Cornelli is an Associate Professor in Classical Studies at the University of Coimbra.
He is Full Professor of Ancient Philosophy in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Brasília (UnB) and director of the UNESCO Archai Chair on the origins of Western thought. He is also the Editor of Archai, Atlantís, and the Plato Journal.
What kind of journal is it?
Archai is the journal of a UNESCO Chair, which I direct at UnB: The UNESCO Archai Chair on the origins of Western thought. Archai means “origins” in Greek. As an interdisciplinary journal of classical studies, it covers a wide range of subjects, including ancient philosophy, history, literature, linguistics — including ancient languages such as Greek and Latin — and archaeology. Methodologically, it embraces a wide range of disciplines that fall under the broader field of classical studies.
Who is the journal’s audience?
Today, we have a very broad international reach. Although we publish in seven or eight languages, we are committed to continuing to publish in Portuguese. At one point, a major international publisher wanted to acquire the journal and publish it only in English, but I declined. The journal was born in Brazil and in the Lusophone world, and it has maintained a strong partnership with Coimbra University Press for many years. I believe we must preserve the Portuguese language.
What kind of content can readers expect?
You might find, for example, a dossier on women in antiquity; an archaeological study of Pompeii’s urban layout, or a range of articles on the origins of thought, including the philosophies of Plato and Aristotle. Readers will also come across work on ancient Greek and Roman law. While the journal covers a broad range of topics, most of our articles explore ancient Greek and Roman thought.
In summary, how would you describe the journal?
It is a project born from the idea of rewriting and rethinking the origins of Western thought — the ideas that still shape how we think today. We seek new ways of telling this story, which is why the Chair behind the journal refers to “plural origins”: a way of looking towards our beginnings and trying to recover what history has forgotten.
