The University of Coimbra (UC) expresses deep sorrow at the passing of Francisco Pinto Balsemão on Tuesday, 21 October.

“Today we bid farewell to one of the great figures of twentieth-century Portugal, a man who was essential in defending freedom of the press and strengthening democracy—values that must be protected in these uncertain times. Balsemão has always been conscious of and committed to building a better world. In his UC Prize acceptance speech [2024], he avoided self-praise, choosing instead to warn of the threats facing democracy and the planet’s sustainability in our divided world. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends,” states UC Rector Amílcar Falcão.

A politician, journalist and entrepreneur, Francisco Pinto Balsemão founded and, until recently, chaired the Impresa Group, which owns the newspaper Expresso and the television channel SIC.

He served as Prime Minister of Portugal from 1981 to 1983.
