‘UC+Activa’: Baseball
The community is invited to try a complete, inclusive sport that is still relatively unknown in Portugal.
UC Sports is expanding the diversity of its offerings through the UC+Activa project by promoting baseball – a dynamic, technical sport accessible to all ages.
According to player Guilherme Rosário, “Baseball is mainly played in the United States, and we are bringing it to Portugal to help introduce a sport that is less well known here.”
Played with a bat and gloves, baseball combines strategy and movement. “The player with the bat is the attacker, and the players with gloves are the defence. The objective of baseball is to score as many points as possible by running all the bases and returning to the starting point,” he explains.
The sport also stands out for its intergenerational inclusivity, suitable for all ages. “You can play baseball at any age,” Guilherme Rosário notes. Beyond its technical and social aspects, baseball provides excellent physical exercise. “One of the main benefits is the physical conditioning, because running the bases involves short, fast sprints – almost like an athletics sprint,” he adds.
At the University of Coimbra, baseball is open to the wider community, with a particular focus on students. “At UC Sports, baseball is primarily aimed at UC students, but not exclusively. People can come and play while also learning a bit more about us and about baseball itself, trying something different from what they are usually used to.”
To ensure everyone can participate, UC Sports provides all the necessary equipment. “We supply all the baseball gear, so you don’t need to bring anything except appropriate shoes and training clothes. Gloves, bats, balls and everything else is provided by us,” he concludes.
UC+Ativa (UC+Active) activities take place every year, following the University’s academic calendar, and are guided by qualified professionals committed to encouraging the academic community to embrace an active, healthy, balanced lifestyle.
Participants should log in and register on the UC Sports platform and complete their enrolment via the “Activities” menu.
