‘UC+Activa’: Traditional Japanese Jujitsu
Strength, mental focus, flexibility and discipline form the foundation of Traditional Japanese Jujitsu, one of the physical activities offered by UC Sports.
This martial art originated in Japan around the year 1600 and was used by samurai as a last resort when they lost their sword in combat, explains Rui Costa, coach of Traditional Japanese Jujitsu. Over time, this self-defence technique evolved and branched into other forms, giving rise to judo and aikido. Within UC+Active, the focus is on teaching traditional Japanese jujitsu.
“It’s a martial art of self-defence that combines throws, holds, joint locks, punches and kicks, always aiming to use the opponent’s strength and balance against them,” says Rui Costa. In addition to the physical component, UC+Active classes place “great emphasis on discipline, which is very common in martial arts, while always ensuring the athletes’ physical integrity,” the coach adds. “It’s a space where we maintain respect.”
Practising Traditional Japanese Jujitsu involves “a lot of sparring,” which helps improve physical fitness and develop “strength, mental focus and flexibility.”
“I would say there’s no age limit for practising Traditional Japanese Jujitsu,” says Rui Costa, who has had students as old as 70. “Of course, there are physical limitations that may prevent certain movements, but there's always a way to adapt while respecting each person's own pace,” he adds.
UC+Ativa (UC+Active) activities take place every year, following the University’s academic calendar, and are guided by qualified professionals committed to encouraging the academic community to embrace an active, healthy, balanced lifestyle.
Participants should log in and register on the UC Sports platform and complete their enrolment via the “Activities” menu.
