Promoted by UC Sports as part of the UC+Ativa [UC+Active] project, functional training is more than just an exercise routine. It offers a practical way to improve quality of life, with visible effects on everyday activities. “Functional training aims to improve people’s physical condition, health, and well-being through exercises that are useful in daily life,” explains Alain Massart, a trainer and lecturer at the University of Coimbra's Faculty of Sport Sciences and Physical Education.

“These are exercises anyone can do at work, in their bedroom when they wake up, or in any city park, using benches, walls or stairs,” says Massart. He emphasises that technique is key: “We place great importance on correct posture. Performing strength exercises incorrectly can damage your joints. Our goal is to strengthen muscles in a functional way, preventing back, neck and knee pain.”

Functional training focuses on improving posture, strength and mobility, always adapted to each person’s abilities. “There’s one thing I never promise people,” says Alain Massart. “That they’ll lose weight. But they will climb stairs more easily, feel happier and manage stress better — those results are guaranteed.”

The aim, he notes, goes beyond aesthetics: it’s about functionality and well-being. “People learn how to lift objects or carry loads safely, keeping a neutral spine and avoiding risky positions,” he adds. In essence, it’s training that teaches how to care for the body while also caring for the mind — a philosophy in line with the University of Coimbra’s commitment to promoting healthy and sustainable lifestyles on and beyond campus.

UC+Ativa activities take place every year, following the University’s academic calendar, and are guided by qualified professionals committed to encouraging the academic community to embrace an active, balanced lifestyle.

Participants should log in and register on the UC Sports platform and complete their enrolment via the “Activities” menu.
