'UC+Ativa': Walking and Running
The UC Sports Walking and Running Group adapts its sessions to each participant’s fitness level, welcoming both beginners and those with more experience.
Walking and/or running are among the most popular physical activities, suitable for all ages. “It’s a very inclusive group — we welcome people from all backgrounds, whether they are complete beginners or already have some experience in running or walking,” says João Figueiredo, the group’s coach. The sessions take place every Wednesday at 18:30, near Pavilion 1 of the University Stadium.
Although walking or running can be done on your own, training in a group gives extra motivation and support. In UC+Ativa’s sessions, “workouts are adapted to each person’s fitness level,” explains João Figueiredo. Sessions start with a warm-up, and participants also receive “tips for exercises they can do on their own.” Beginners, for example, are encouraged to start with shorter routes until they gain some experience and avoid injury.
The coach adds that "walking or running improves lung capacity and cardiovascular health and helps manage body weight. After a few sessions, participants will start to notice progress and see a clear difference in how long they can walk or run for." João Figueiredo also highlights the social aspect of the group: 'We spend a lot of time together and chat a lot.'
UC+Ativa (UC+Active) activities take place every year, following the University’s academic calendar, and are guided by qualified professionals committed to encouraging the academic community to embrace an active, healthy, balanced lifestyle.
Participants should log in and register on the UC Sports platform and complete their enrolment via the “Activities” menu.
