'UC+Ativa': Yoga
More than just a physical practice, yoga works the body and mind in a holistic way.
Yoga is an ancient practice that originated in India as a spiritual discipline. “It’s not just something you do on the mat; it’s something you live every day – a philosophy and a way of life,” explains instructor Anton Pugach. The activity is promoted by UC Sports as part of the UC+Activa project, aimed at the University of Coimbra (UC) community.
In Sanskrit, the word yoga means 'union', and 'through the various tools in yoga’s arsenal, we can first create union within ourselves and then with everything around us'. By combining physical movement, breathing techniques and meditation, yoga helps reduce stress, improve flexibility and balance, and strengthen muscles. "The most important thing is to practise regularly and to be disciplined. There are several lineages within yoga, but if we practise a bit of everything, we can enjoy benefits at every level – physical, mental, emotional and even social," says Anton Pugach.
“Anyone, at any age, can join yoga classes,” the instructor adds. Those still undecided can attend two trial classes free of charge.
UC+Ativa (UC+Active) activities take place every year, following the University’s academic calendar, and are guided by qualified professionals committed to encouraging the academic community to embrace an active, balanced lifestyle.
Participants should log in and register on the UC Sports platform and complete their enrolment via the “Activities” menu.
