Providing medical care to all members of the university community, including students and staff, is the guiding principle of the University of Coimbra (UC) Health Services. Based in the Faculty of Medicine building at Campus 1, the services are offered at reduced cost or free of charge.

According to António Queirós, Head of the Occupational Safety and Health Division at the Social Services of the University of Coimbra (SASUC), "consultations cover general practice, gynaecology, family planning, travel medicine, psychiatry — with dedicated appointments for young university students — as well as psychology and nursing," and are available not only to UC students, but also to staff, faculty members, and their families.

UC Health Services also prioritise preventive care, running several programmes, including the provision of free contraceptives and screenings. ‘We carry out laboratory check-ups and screening for sexually transmitted infections upon request,’ adds António Queirós.

Mental health support is a key focus, with a comprehensive programme for students that includes group therapy sessions such as Stop Procrastination, Insomnia from A to Zzz, and Anxiety Management, alongside activities aimed at developing skills and fostering integration.

In 2024, UC Health Services delivered over 9,000 consultations, including 2,500 in psychology. Approximately 350 students were screened for sexually transmitted infections, and around 600 underwent general check-ups. Support also extends to diagnosis and treatment. 'We have an agreement with the National Health Service, so we can request additional diagnostic tests, X-rays and lab tests and prescribe medication just like a regular NHS health centre,' concludes António Queirós.
