UC Summer University 2025 kicked off this Sunday with near 600 participants
UV is celebrating its 15th anniversary with a record number of attendees.
The opening session of the University of Coimbra’s Summer University 2025 (Universidade de Verão – UV) took place on Sunday, 27 July at 7 pm in the historic Pátio das Escolas. Welcome speeches were given by UC Rector Amílcar Falcão, Vice-Rector for Education and Attractiveness Cristina Albuquerque, former Vice-Rector Cristina Robalo Cordeiro — who launched the first edition 15 years ago — and Bruna Frederico, Vice-President of the AAC Directorate-General.
Over the week, 584 high-school students will experience what it’s like to study at UC. This edition sets a new record, with 49 more participants than in 2024. “The Summer University has been attracting increasing numbers of young people and their parents year after year,” said Rector Amílcar Falcão. The programme offers an immersive experience, including visits to laboratories, meals in university canteens, stays in student residences, making friendships, and possibly, as has often happened, returning to UC as students in the coming years.
The Summer University offers 26 fields of study, organised into four broad scientific areas, alongside a rich social and cultural programme. Once again, it is supported by the Academic Association of Coimbra (AAC), which will provide nearly 70 monitors responsible for welcoming, guiding, and inspiring the participants. For AAC Vice-President Bruna Frederico, the Summer University “celebrates knowledge, curiosity and the academic spirit that define this city and this institution.”
For the first time, students will be able to explore more than one field of study. Besides the main subject they enrolled in, participants can also attend a scientific workshop in a different discipline. This broader approach aims to give students a more comprehensive understanding of UC’s academic offerings and help them make more informed choices about their future studies.
The Summer University is organised by the University of Coimbra in partnership with the Academic Association of Coimbra (AAC, the Coimbra Students’ Union), with support from Santander Universities and the Portuguese Recovery and Resilience Plan.
