University of Coimbra and Macao Polytechnic University establish joint laboratory to develop innovative ageing solutions
The Joint Laboratory in Artificial Intelligence for Healthy Longevity aims to slow down ageing and enhance quality of life.
The University of Coimbra (UC) and Macao Polytechnic University (MPU) have signed a new cooperation agreement to establish a laboratory dedicated to studying the biology of ageing and applying artificial intelligence in the development of medicines and new therapies to promote active and healthy ageing.
The Joint Artificial Intelligence Laboratory for Healthy Longevity will operate from two research hubs — one in Coimbra and another in Hengqin — with the central mission of developing innovative solutions that can help slow down ageing and enhance quality of life by combining biomedical research with the potential of artificial intelligence.
According to the Rector of the University of Coimbra, Amílcar Falcão, “The Joint Artificial Intelligence Laboratory for Healthy Longevity represents the internationalisation of the University of Coimbra’s expertise in ageing studies, giving global visibility to the work UC has been developing in this field, particularly through the Multidisciplinary Institute of Ageing (MIA Portugal).”
"We want to work together in the field of health, with a special focus on healthy longevity, since the University of Coimbra is very strong in this area, and we are very strong in artificial intelligence," highlighted Im Sio Kei, Rector of Macao Polytechnic University.
This new scientific structure reinforces the collaboration between UC and MPU. This partnership has already brought together several research teams in joint scientific projects, such as the Joint Laboratory in Advanced Technologies for Smart Cities, established in 2022.
At the launch ceremony of the new laboratory, the two institutions further signed agreements to foster educational cooperation and the mobility of students, faculty, and researchers.
