University of Coimbra organises seminar on space
The session ‘Geopolitics of Outer Space’ will take place at the Geophysical and Astronomical Observatory of the University of Coimbra at 16.30.
The Centre for Earth and Space Research of the University of Coimbra (CITEUC) is organising the seminar 'Geopolitics of Outer Space' this Wednesday, 11 December. The session will take place at the Geophysical and Astronomical Observatory (OGA) of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology (FCTUC) at 16:30.
'Although there is no internationally defined boundary, the area 100 km above mean sea level is referred to as sidereal space, outer space, or simply space. It is currently recognised as an operational domain by many states and organisations, such as NATO,' explains Pedro Costa, Head of the Portuguese Air Force (FAP) Space Operations Centre and a speaker at the event.
Costa adds, 'Space is becoming increasingly strategic for states, both from an economic perspective and in terms of their ability to influence the international arena. Space represents power, which has led to the development of theories that seek to explain human behaviour in this new operational area for security and defence.'
Therefore, this event aims to learn more about Space and what it means for society in general, and Security and Defence in particular. It will also be an opportunity to bring institutions closer together and to present the latest developments in the Portuguese Air Force regarding the integration of space in operational activities.
This seminar aims to explore the importance of space for society as a whole, with a particular focus on its implications for security and defence. It will also serve as an opportunity to strengthen collaboration among institutions and showcase the latest developments by the Portuguese Air Force in integrating space into operational activities.
The Geopolitics of Outer Space seminar will highlight the importance of strengthening ties between academia and the armed forces in strategic areas such as aeronautics, space, and defence, with opportunities for collaboration on projects and theses,' says Teresa Seixas, a lecturer at the University of Porto and a researcher at CITEUC.
