Maria da Conceição Lopes
The Project “Archeogeographie” (www.archeogeographie.org), led by Gérard Chouquer and M. Conceição Lopes, aims at the development of this scientific area and its consolidation in University teaching. It is structured around specific projects such as the post- PhD research undertaken by Magali Wateaux “Medieval and Modern planning within the Alentejo, Portugal. Archaeogeography in the agrarian parceling system” SFRH / BPD / 66631 / 2009, and in the publication of manuals and works of reference.
The internationalization of the group is real. The projects for the Near East and North Africa, despite the direct impact in the carrying out of the defined objectives for the projects running in Syria inserted within the ECUMS network (PTDC/HIS-ARQ/103337/2008 Spaces and Architecture in Tell Beydar, 2010-2013), led by M. Conceição Lopes and in Egypt “The First Portuguese Archaeology in Egypt-Apries Palace Memphis” (http://home.utad.pt/~apries/), led by Maria Helena Trindade Lopes.
The impediment to carry out fieldwork has implied a redefinition of previously defined strategies.
The Project running in Syria, has defined its continuation strategy on research leading to the elaboration of PhD dissertations, working on the mass of information that the ECUMS network has in its possession and in the publication of results. And at the same time, to the creation of conditions for a reorganization of the framework of the teams working in the region, participation in the creation of new international networks, namely the network intended for the study of Hellenism in the Jabour region and the transfer of the excavation site to Mesopotamia, working with other partners.
Research leading to PhD dissertations, carried out within the ECUMS Framework, “Urban space within the ancient Mesopotamian city: planning and circulation” (SFRH/BD/48721/2008) that amongst other things uses Space-syntax as a method of analysis and “The anatomy of a rural community: the Hellenistic period in Tell Beydar” (SFRH/BD/47978/2008), fits in to these objectives. International public outreach whether via articles or by attending scientific meetings, supports the continuation of this project.
Research in Egypt, arising from the Project “The First Portuguese Archaeology Project in Egypt - Apries Palace– Memphis”, led by Helena Trindade Lopes, has, in general, come across the same problems and has defined the same generic objectives as the aforementioned research. Research projects, of which “The Training of Portuguese experts in Egyptology and in new technologies applied to archaeology through the participation of Portuguese University archaeology students in Portuguese archaeological projects in Egypt (F.C.S.H. – U.N.L / F.C.G.), and the post PhD projects, supervised by Helena T. Lopes.“The complete study of viticulture and oenology in Egyptian tombs”, (PTDC/HIS-ARQ/112562/2009, led by Maria Rosa Guasch Jané and “The Saite Renaissance in Iberian colections - Integration of all Egyptian collections in Portugal and Spain into an Iberian documental corpus for Egypt's Late Period (664-332 BC)” led by Ronaldo Guilherme Gurgel Pereira, continue the research in this troubled phase of the region (SFRH/BPD/78279/2011/J53868802R1Y).
Public outreach and the external impact of this research have been guaranteed by the vast set of publications, the many workshops organized within
the ambit of this research and the frequent scientific meetings.
Research relating to the role of historic urban landscapes within the development process and to the integration of contemporary communities has been structured around projects of diverse form and content: “The development of the idea of cultural world heritage from UNESCO’s list after the 1972 convention agreement: critical analysis and contribution to an assessment” (L'évolution de la notion de patrimoine mondial culturel et de la liste de l'unesco depuis l'établissement de la convention en 1972: analyse critique et contribution a une evaluation) developed by Ana Paula Amendoeira, supervised by F. Choay, with a PhD in view in Management of Urban space, “Rock painting in the Jacobine area. Bahia Brazil, developed by Carlos Costa within the ambit of his PhD thesis in Anthropology, led by M. C. Lopes and “Mbanza Kongo. A city to unearth.”
