The RG Archaeology and Spaces in Medieval and Modern Times develop the Centre’s strategic course of action (archaeological investigation, the creation of theoretical and methodological tools for research, heritage study and promotion and the internationalization of research) with the following course of action for work and scientific activities:
- The “Transition between Late Antiquity and the Islamic period”, in conjunction with the RG “Archaeology of Lusitania: structures and dynamics” is give continuity to research. The results will be made known by means of an international scientific meeting to be organized in 2012, and also by various publications.
- Territories, borders, cultural identities and cultural inheritance in the Medieval and Modern period. Historical-archaeological investigation into border identities dating from Late Antiquity to the Modern period continues to be developed, with special emphasis at Moura Castle.
- Archaeology and Territory in the Lower Marca – Entre-Douro-e-Tejo, frontier area (8th to 13th centuries). The study of population strategies and models for the organization of the territory between the 8th and 13th centuries are being developed within this context.
- Urban topography – on the one hand, the historic development of Mértola’s outskirts and its functions throughout the centuries are being studied by Mértola city, and on the other hand, excavations in the citadel area have begun again. Promotion of the results of this line of research are centred on the creation of a museum dealing with Mértola’s riverside settlements.
- Funeral archaeology in collaboration with the Coimbra University Anthropology and Health Research Centre is being intensified with the contracting of a scholarship student. The main objective is to systemize the information that exists on Mértola’s necropolis.
- Mediterranean Islamic pottery brings together the project to systematize the Islamic pottery of the Gharb al-Ândalus (CIGA) with the study of the particularly significant unpublished collections, especially those found in the Alentejo. Promotion of this research is of high priority and will consist of the holding of public courses, the organization of the 10th International Congress on Mediterranean Medieval Ceramics, the publication of papers and a scientific committee for exhibitions.
- Ethno-archaeology. Three lines of work are to be highlighted in this area: research on the Mediterranean country way of life within Mértola’s rural community, centred on a case study in the Cerro das Oliveiras; research into rural architecture in the Algarve highlands, giving special significance to the understanding of materials, the building trades and the organization of clusters within the territory; the study of food and Mediterranean gastronomic heritage, priority being given to the collecting of information.
- Language and history at the border. In this course of action, the Lexical Treasury of the border language (dictionary of words of traditional use at the Portuguese - Spanish border) is continue to be developed as well as the publication of the 3rd revised and enlarged electronic Bibliography of language and history at the border.
On the editorial side, the RG is giving continuity to the publication of the Medieval Archaeological Review, the publication of the proceedings of the meetings, and the preparation of various scientific papers and catalogues from different museums.
Another of the group’s aims is the creation and strengthening of infrastructures to support research, especially by means of improvement to the library at CAM, reinforcement of equipment in the laboratories and the creation of work space and accommodation for researchers and trainees.
Furthermore, the group wants to strengthen its activity in advanced training, by means of supervising and co-supervising theses, developing specialization courses, Masters and PhD Inter-University courses.

Juan Zozaya Stabel-Hansen co-organised the Congress entitled “The Wonders of the World” (Die Wunder der Welt) in Berlin.
The internationalization of the group has become intensified due to partnerships with research centres mainly in Spain, France and Italy. New collaborative relationships have been established with Madrid’s CSIC History Institute which has allowed collaboration within the area of zoo- archaeology, ties have been strengthened with Velazquez House, a French research Centre in Madrid and with the Sorbonne IV, participating in a project which will bring PhD students of this Institution to be welcomed in Mértola. The collaboration with the Mérida Archaeological Institute and with the Mérida Ciudad Monumental Consortium has continued from strength to strength with an exchange of researchers and with the joint preparation of events.
Collaboration with AIECM2 has consolidated over this last year due to the organization of the 10th Congress CICM2 which will take place in Silves in 2012. The roots of this partnership have established co-operation networks with the Universities of Venice, Rome, Aix em-Provence, Athens, Granada and the French Institute of Archaeology in Cairo.
Collaboration has also been consolidated with private foreign researchers, especially along the lines of Late Antiquity, Ethno-archaeology and Islamic pottery. Apart from the already existing collaboration with the research group LEMI (Information Metric Studies Laboratory) from the Carlos III University in Madrid and the CIGA group of researchers from the Louvre Museum, Cambridge Museum and the Universities of Seville, Huelva and Cadiz, the Ethno-archaeology group has established links with the Faculty of Architecture from Seville University. We are also counting on the participation of Spanish students in the excavations carried out in Mértola.
Members of the Centre have also collaborated in scientific committees and several peer review Journals, for example “Archaeology and Medieval Territory,” the University of Jaén (Spain) or “Medieval Archaeology,” and have been invited to teach post-graduate courses in foreign universities.

Organization of the conference "Interpretations of the Christian South" organized by Santiago Macias and Virgílio Lopes.
On the one hand, the internationalization of the group consisted of carrying out scientific activities together with researchers of similar themes, especially within the areas of investigation into Ethno-archaeology and Islamic Ceramics. So now the CIGA group has researchers from the Louvre Museum, Cambridge Museum and the Universities of Seville, Huelva and Cadiz. Equally, it is intended to institutionalize Agustín Ortega’s collaboration with the INAH Centre in Baja, California, integrating the investigation network that the latter shares with archaeologists, anthropologists and historians from Mexico and the United States. Furthermore, Filipa Medeiros and Armanda Salgado, PhD candidates, are collaborating with the research group LEMI (Laboratory for the Metric Studies of Information) from Madrid’s Carlos III University. We also count on the participation of Spanish students in the excavations being carried out in Mértola. The 3-month-long traineeship in Mértola by the Masters candidate Houssemeddinn Chachia deserves a special mention. He is carrying out research work on the Moors of Tunis and this has allowed the relationship with Manouba University in Tunisia to be strengthened further.
On the other hand, activities to spread information were promoted, namely holding scientific meetings together, amongst which “The Cycle of conferences: Cities in the Iberian Peninsular. Archaeological news” stands out. This was organized by Mérida’s Archaeological Institute and Merida’s Historical-Artistic and Archaeological city monuments Consortium.
Members of the Centre have also collaborated in scientific committees of several peer review journals: Medievalista, issued by the Instituto de Estudos Medievais – FCSH/UNL (Santiago Macias); Arqueología y Territorio Medieval, University of Jaén, Spain (Helena Catarino and Susana Gómez), Antiquitas, Municipality of Priego de Córdoba, Spain.
The collaboration with the International Association for the study of Medieval ceramics in the Mediterranean (AIECM2) has special relevance in the collaboration to organize the 10th International Congress on Medieval Ceramics in the Mediterranean which will take place in Silves in 2012.
Finally, the role of coordinating the Portuguese network is to be highlighted. This has been taken on by the Mértola’s Archaeological Site in the Anna Lindh Foundation, for the cultural development of the Mediterranean, financed by the programme EUROMED.

The line of research on Islamic Ceramics from the Gharb al-Ândalus organized a scientific meeting “The Gharb al-Ândalus. Problems arising and new contributions relating to ceramics” on 15th and 16th May, 2009, in Mértola, with the help of FCT (FACC) and the Local Authorities of Mértola, Silves and Tavira (co-ordinated by. Susana Gómez Martínez and Helena Catarino).
Members of the group participated in the organization of the following scientific meetings:
“Day conference on the study of Moslem graffitti in Medieval Portugal. Written objects.” (“Journée d ’étude Graffites musulmans du Portugal Médiéval. Les objets inscrits”) held on 13th March 2009 in Velázquez House, Madrid, promoted by the Ausonius Institute (Bordeaux) and Mértola ́s Archaelogical Site (co-organized by Susana Gómez).
IX International Congress on Medieval Ceramics in the Mediterranean (IX Congresso Internacionale sulla Cerâmica Medievale nel Mediterraneo) organized from 23rd to 28th November 2009 by AIECM2 , the Department Scienze dell’Antichità and by Vicino Oriente –the Ca’Foscari University of Venice. (Juan Zozaya, Manuel Retuerce and Susana Gómez participated in the Scientific Committee).
International Conference on Heritage and Development organized by the Piaget Institute and the Local Authorities of Trancoso and Vila Nova de Foz Côa (Cláudio Torres and Susana Gómez participated in the scientific committee) from 30th June to !st July 2009 in Trancoso and Vila Nova de Foz Côa
I International Congress on “Urban spaces in the Western Mediterranean, monograms VI-VIII”, (“Espacios Urbanos en el Occidente Mediterráneo, siglos VI-VIII”, organized by the Toletum Visigodo Consortium (Cláudio Torres participated in the scientific committee) from 30th September to 3rd October 2009 in Toledo
Mediterranean Portugal workshop, organized by the Millenniumbcp bank on 22nd July 2009 (Santiago Macias participated in the organization)
3rd International Meeting on Architecture of the Mediterranean (RIPAM 3) organized from 15th to 19 October 2009 by the Lusíada University in Lisbon, (Santiago Macias participated in the Scientific Commission).
The enlargement of the work group on the Islamic Ceramics of the Gharb Al-Ândalus was very important. It now goes beyond the border area between Portugal and Spain and includes researchers from Mérida, Sevilha, Huelva and Cambridge.
Mértola’s Archaeological Site was invited to become part of a work group formed by researchers from Spain, Germany, Italy and Portugal, committed to developing a multi-disciplinary research network on the Mediterranean rural environment and landscape. The first work meeting to elaborate this network research project was held from 15th to 17th June 2009 in Granada during the Jornadas Técnicas El medio rural de al-Andalus: 2000 años de transformaciones en el paisaje, organized by the Granada School of Arab Studies.
The participation of various members of the group in scientific committees for the organization of International Conferences and in various International journals with this theme is to be emphasized. For example, Helena Catarino and Susana Gómez have participated on the Scientific Board for the journal Medieval Archaeology and Territory (Arqueología e Territorio Medieval) from Jaén University (Spain) or the participation of Susana Gómez, Manuel Retuerce and Juan Zozaya in the Scientific Committee that organizes the Congresses on Medieval Ceramics in the Mediterranean. To be precise, the X International Congress Medieval Ceramics in the Mediterranean will take place in Portugal in 2012 organized by members of the Group in collaboration with Silves Local Authority.
Furthermore, reference should be made to the collaboration of members of the group in advanced training courses in other countries, namely Helena Catarino’s collaboration in the Inter-university’s Masters on Archaeology and Heritage. Science and Profession from the Universities of Córdova, Seville, Huelva and Málaga, and Susana Gómez in the Masters in Cultural and Environmental Heritage at Huelva University
