Building HOPE - Building Holistic Optimization of Prosumed Energy

Summary

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the driving force behind the ongoing industrial revolution. This revolution is fuelled by increasing adoption of state-of-the-art sensing and data collection technologies as well as advancements in data processing solutions. AI is expected to play a significant role in the international battle against climate change. Leveraging advanced machine learning techniques improves efficiency of electric systems and helps to decarbonize this critical sector. The high-level objective of this project is to leverage data collection and sensing advancements and develop AI based methodologies to facilitate transition towards a cleaner energy future.

Specifically, this project will focus on improving energy efficiency of buildings. In Portugal, buildings consume more than 30% of final energy and it is estimated that 50% of this consumption can be reduced by 50% through energy efficiency measures. However, the sector is largely untapped due to limitations of current solutions. This project proposes to develop and validate a tool for Holistic Optimization of Prosumed Energy (HOPE) of buildings. This tool is intended to redefine buildings energy management practices in the context of smart urban environments. This project’s resulting technology will add new dimensions to Energy management concept and extend the capabilities of state-of- the-art Energy Management Systems by (i) characterizing in detail energy services consumption; (ii) perform asset management; (iii) optimizing the operation across multiple energy systems (generation, storage and service demand); (iv) aiding building owners with contract management into one single platform.
