Research program overview

In this strategic project will pursue the scientific challenge of early diagnosis and personalized medicine by developing new molecular, functional imaging and diagnostic/interventional approaches in diseases where a molecule to man research strategy is most needed.

The ultimate goal is to improve clinical understanding of disease mechanisms, early diagnosis and the proven ability to generate links with partners such as the pharmaceutical industry.

We will develop multivariate diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers based on functional and molecular imaging approaches in neurodegenerative, neurodevelopmental, and chronic disorders affecting the brain, the heart, eye and liver such as diabetes. We will perform large-scale human imaging of structure, chemistry and function with a focus on the human brain, heart and vascular structures across the lifespan

Given the intriguing link between abnormal neurodevelopment and cell cycle pathologies at the molecular level, we will also develop new molecular imaging approaches that are relevant not only for clinical neuroscience but also for the study of neuroendocrine tumors and other forms of cancer where multimodal biomarker imaging is highly relevant.

Our biomarker research follows up previous work where we were able to link molecular mechanisms of disease in several neurodegenerative and neurodevelopmental disorders and implemented novel diagnostic imaging biomarkers to better define and detect early disease processes and test therapeutic targets.

A future path in our program is to develop theranostic approaches, which combines diagnostic imaging with targeted therapeutic approaches.
